Our Perspective On Gumbo

Gumbo is a Southern 'Soup' dish which traditionally features Sausage, Chicken, Duck and/or various types of Seafoods (e.g., Shrimp, Crab, Oysters). The roots of Gumbo are both Cajun and Creole, but regardless of Gumbo’s origin, it’s well known for its Flavors, Spiciness, and ROUX. Many Southerners would swear, “It’s the Roux which makes the Gumbo.” There are those who believe “Gumbo must be served with Rice and sprinkled with Gumbo File” to truly be that Southern dish.

Although primarily eaten during the cold weather season in the South, many Southerners who migrated to the West Coast and everywhere else, often enjoy Gumbo year-round. There are many different versions of Gumbo, with everyone believing their Gumbo is the BEST!! Regardless of the version, the challenge with Gumbo, is to be able to make it in less than the 3-4 hours it normally takes to make Gumbo from scratch. With preparation and cooking being so time-consuming many consider Gumbo to be a special occasion dish!
